How to participate
Theme
2024 marks the 30th anniversary of Malaysian International Furniture Fair (MIFF) – a milestone to celebrate the global success of Southeast Asia’s largest furniture show.
To commemorate MIFF’s rise from humble beginnings to one of the world’s best industry events, the 2024 MIFF Furniture Design Competition (FDC) is inviting young designers and professionals to create a bold and unique furniture piece.
The challenge is to design a Statement Chair and create your interpretation of the most basic and most essential piece of furniture for the home and workspace as befitting our theme “Celebration”.
Express your creativity and push the boundaries of traditional furniture design to create a statement piece that showcases your originality as a furniture innovator, and impress our distinguished panel of international judges, established exhibitors and professional buyers at MIFF.
Eligibility
Open to all young designers – Malaysian and foreigners residing, working or studying in Malaysia with authorised permits.
Prizes
1st Prize | RM 5,000 + Trophy + Certificate
2nd Prize | RM 3,000 + Trophy + Certificate
3rd Prize | RM 2,000 + Trophy + Certificate
Finalists: Certificate
Best Mentor Award: RM2,000 + Certificate
Best Institution Award: Certificate
Judging Criteria
Creativity (50 marks)
Concept and Creativity (20%):
- Idea or invention and its implementation
- Imaginative and original design
Artistic (15%):
- Artistic design elements
Technology and Material Usage (15%)
- Integration of technology into design
- Practicality of material application
Functionality (20 marks)
Ergonomics (10%):
Consideration of health, comfort and efficiency factors
Safety (10%):
Free of dangerous substance and health/ injury risk
Visual Impact (20 marks)
Appearance, composition and aesthetic design
Presentation (10 marks)
Quality of artwork, quality of mock-up unit (5%)
The ability to present the idea (5%)
Submission Requirements
Participants are required to submit the following:
Presentation slides
- At least 6 pages
- In JPEG or PDF format
- 1920 x 1080 size (Landscape Orientation)

Page 1: 3D overall view (taken from the best angle) of the design
Page 2: Design Concept
– Concept influencing the design
– Singularity of the furniture piece (Why it is unique and special)
– Potential use and market appealPage 3: Top view and elevations from all 4 sides (with exact dimensions)
Page 4: Drawing/3D views with texts explaining the functions of furniture parts
Pages 5&6: Any other 3D views & Technical details (Materials, construction techniques etc
Page 7: Drawing of the application of the furniture piece in an interior space.
